Last Minute Check on Sprinkler Valves

As the growing season winds down and before you winterize your residential irrigation system, it’s worthwhile to step back and thoroughly inspect your system for any needed changes or repairs.

Over the winter, as the ground freezes, any leaks or ruptures in the pipes can get worse. At first it may seem like a reasonable idea to leave it until spring but by then it may be a much bigger problem as the ground shifts and moves as it freezes and thaws.

Sprinkler valves are a common source of problems and these can show up in various ways. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Issues with water pressure in your home can be a sign of broken or malfunctioning sprinkler valve
  • Leaks around the valve may be repaired or replaced depending on the exact nature of the problem
  • If some areas are receiving enough water but others suffer from low water output, one of the valves may be broken or obstructed, not be allowing sufficient water flow
  • When one sprinkler valve doesn’t turn on with the others  on a timer system, it could be a wiring issue or the valve itself
  • If you notice standing water or leaks at the sprinkler head that’s farthest away from the valve, the valve may not be shutting off properly – debris in the valve may be the culprit here
